When I first wrote the book, I imagined a little girl as the sole main character. But, I quickly realized there are already so many black children’s book that featured little girls. It became important to me that the story had a black boy, a black girl, and a mixed-race child. So the final book features 3 different children, interacting with 3 different parental figures.

When I initially wrote the book, I only include a couple of affirmations. However, the more I read and re-read the book, it became clear that adding more affirmations would give the reader a breather and allow them to look inside themselves by saying the affirmations out loud at various points throughout the book.

It was important for me to have affirmations that represented 4 areas: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The affirmations needed to highlight external beauty, internal beauty, good moral character, integrity, and self-worth

I think it is important to show that boldness can come from little children. It takes bravery and boldness to stand for what right. That bravery can come in different ages and different sizes, big or small.

In the parental roles, it was important for me to include a father, a mother and a grandparent. Many black children are either raised by their grandparents, or the grandparents are very influential in their upbringing
